Decorate your living room in 8 steps! Tips, ideas and inspiration

Je woonkamer inrichten in 8 stappen! Tips, ideeën en inspiratie

Step 1 - Fitting & Measuring

Start at the beginning. If you have a small living room or you don't know where to start, never forget to measure the dimensions of the living room carefully. Keep wide margins so that furniture is not too close together. You can easily create a more spacious feeling by not filling up the living room too much.

Save space by using the space as practically as possible. Do you have a small living room and a flat TV? Then hang the television on a wall bracket so that a TV cabinet is not necessary. With a smaller one coffee table keep enough space in the living room to create a walkway to the other rooms. You can also choose to combine it with several small ones side tables as a coffee table, so you can easily move it when you have a living room full of visitors.

Do you have a very large living room and don't know what to do with all that space? Then don't immediately fill your living room with all kinds of large furniture, but decorate the room in a more cozy way. One rug does wonders for the atmosphere in your living room and immediately gives it a more 'filling' experience. In addition, a soft rug is also wonderful to rest your feet on, so an absolute win-win situation!

Step 2 – Start with the floor!

A floor is an essential part of your living room and determines the atmosphere of your interior. In a small living room it is very important to choose a good floor. The wrong color or material can suddenly make the living room appear much smaller.

Color

If you have a small living room, choose a floor in the same color (shade) as your walls. In this way you create a spatial whole and the furniture appears to float in the living room. A beautiful wooden floor in a dark shade will look good with a warm and dark color on the wall and will only enhance the atmosphere. With a fresh white wall or wall in light colors, it is wise to also choose a floor in a light(er) shade, such as light oak or gray. Also take the colors in your furniture into account and aim for as minimal contrast as possible.

Material

There is so much to pay attention to when purchasing a beautiful floor. Choosing the right material is just as important as the choice of color. Comfort is also an important point to take into account. Of course, you live very differently on a carpeted floor than on a laminate floor! And what do you find important about the floor: do you want to be able to mop the floor or do you prefer comfort and a soft material? If you have any doubts, you can always opt for a beautiful wooden floor with a soft rug cover.

Wooden floor

With a wooden (parquet) floor, your interior immediately radiates a lot of warmth. The natural appearance of parquet makes it suitable for multiple interior styles. A well-known interior style where parquet is used is the country style, but a beautiful parquet floor will also not look out of place in modern and contemporary furnishings!

Cast floor

A trend that we see increasingly emerging in different interior styles is the well-known cast floor. Cast floors are increasingly being installed in modern homes and have many advantages. A cast floor is resistant to wear and stains and is therefore very durable. In addition, cast floors can be kept perfectly clean and can be cleaned both wet and dry.

Concrete floor

A popular floor covering within the industrial style is the concrete floor. With a concrete floor you add an industrial and sturdy character to your home. Create a loft effect by combining the floor with natural materials such as wood, or emphasize the sturdy character by choosing industrial furniture in materials such as metal and iron.

Carpet

Carpet is a comfortable choice for a floor and has many advantages. A floor covering is wonderfully warm under your feet and is also sound-absorbing. In addition, carpeting is easy to move and simple to clean. Unfortunately, carpeting is very sensitive to stains, so take this into account when choosing both material and color.

Step 3 - The Wall

A splash of color on the wall can make a world of difference in the interior. It is important to choose the right color and location so that it turns out well.

Color

Look carefully at the wall in the living room that you want to work on. What form does this take, and what do you want to achieve with it? Do you want to make it appear larger, or 'break up' the wall by painting a certain wall in a contrasting color?

If you want to make a statement in the living room, choose the purest (strong) variant of the color. This will make the wall really pop and provide a 'wow effect'. With a wall in a lighter color, such as a pastel shade, you create a calm effect.

Natural light

Always take the natural lighting in your living room into account. A wall that receives little daylight looks darker than a wall that shines on the sun for most of the day. It is best to give a wall that has little light a lighter accent color. It is wise to first paint a color sample on the wall so that you can immediately view the color.

Pattern

A pattern on a particular wall can have a big effect on your living room. In a small living room it is a good idea to work vertically instead of horizontally. A small living room can also be easily enlarged optically by using a mirror. The best effect is achieved by choosing one large mirror instead of small mirrors in a large group.

Step 4 - The large furniture

Once you have carefully selected the wall and floor for the living room, you can start with the best part: setting it up! Obviously it is useful to start with the larger furniture. Start with the sofa and decide which direction you would like it to face. Are you going for a corner sofa? Then decide in advance which side you want the corner to be on and ensure that the corner does not close off the room for an optimal spatial effect.

Step 5 - Small furniture

After the sofa is showing off in the living room, you can continue with the other larger furniture such as it TV cabinet or a coffee table. Take the size of your living room into account and make sure there is enough space around the furniture to easily walk around it.

Have you the coffee table and sofa are now in place? Only then start looking for a suitable rug, like thisthat it brings together the style of the sofa and the coffee table(s) for a beautiful whole.

Step 6 – Lighting

After all the furniture has been carefully placed in the living room, you can start with the next step: the lighting. With the right lighting, the finishing touches can be put in place and you can create the desired atmosphere in the living room.

Nowadays we see that little use is made of it in living rooms hanging lamps but more and more people are opting for atmospheric lighting using smaller lamps. So are the industrial ones floor- and studio lamps are back! They immediately give your living room a cool atmosphere and quickly illuminate a large part of your living room.
Also a new upcoming trend are the wall lamps which we will see more and more in the living room and kitchen. Ehis a wall lamp very functional and takes up virtually no space, making it easy to install!

Step 7 - Accessories

The accessories are the finishing touch in your interior. Nowadays there is a choice of countless accessories that determine the interior. Think of cushions, plaids, an attractive clock, a special photo, special vases, etc.
To create balance in the space, it is nice to use different patterns and materials. A beautiful combination of cotton, wool, glass, wood and stone ensures that a room does not become superficial.

Step 8 - Personalize

In addition to the items you purchased in a nice interior design store or webshop, adding personal items to the interior is invaluable. This one accessories ultimately form your own unique style and home and therefore slightly different from others.

So frame those beautiful photos of your family and hang them on the living room wall for a personal touch. Use different frames to create a playful effect. Items that you encounter while traveling, for example, can then be added to your interior more quickly, without breaking the whole. Moreover, adding family heirlooms to the interior also has a positive effect. This is how you turn your house into a real home and put your personal stamp on the interior!
